What are the constituents of essential oils?
Essential oils are complex mixtures of volatile organic compounds that are extracted from plant. These compounds can vary widely depending on the plant species, the part of the plant used for extraction, and the extraction method used. Some common constituents of essential oils include:
Terpenes: Terpenes are a large and diverse class of compounds that are found in many plants. They give essential oils their characteristic fragrances and are responsible for many of their therapeutic properties.
Phenols: Phenols are a class of aromatic compounds that are found in many essential oils. They have strong antiseptic and antioxidant properties and are believed to be responsible for many of the health benefits of essential oils.
Alcohols: Alcohols are a class of compounds that are found in many essential oils. They have antibacterial and antifungal properties and are often used in skin care products.
Aldehydes: Aldehydes are a class of compounds that have a characteristic fruity or citrusy fragrance. They have antiseptic and sedative properties and are often used in aromatherapy.
Ketones: Ketones are a class of compounds that are found in some essential oils, such as lavender and sage. They have antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties and are often used in natural remedies for headaches and menstrual cramps.
Esters: Esters are a class of compounds that have a sweet, fruity fragrance. They have calming and sedative properties and are often used in aromatherapy for stress relief.
These are just some of the many constituents that can be found in essential oils. The specific combination and concentration of compounds in each oil can vary widely, which is why different essential oils have different fragrances and therapeutic properties.
How are essential oils extracted from aromatic plants?
Essential oils are extracted by many methods. Steam distillation: This is the most common method of essential oil extraction. It involves passing steam through the plant material to vaporize the volatile compounds, which are then condensed and collected as the essential oil. Distilling an essential oil is both an art and science. Cold pressing: This method is used for some essential oils, such as those derived from nuts and seeds. It involves pressing the plant material to extract the oil without the use of heat. Solvent extraction: This method involves using a solvent, such as ethanol or hexane, to extract the essential oil from the plant material. The solvent is then evaporated, leaving behind the essential oil. Carbon dioxide extraction: This method uses pressurized carbon dioxide to extract the essential oil from the plant material. It is a relatively new method and is often used for delicate plant materials. Expression: This method is used for citrus oils, where the oil is extracted by pressing the outer rind of the fruit.
The choice of extraction method depends on the plant material being used and the desired quality of the essential oil. Steam distillation is the most common and widely used method for essential oil extraction, as it is effective for a wide range of plant materials and produces high-quality oils.
Whether essential oils and fragrances (perfume) oils are same?
Essential oils and fragrance oils (perfume oils) are not the same, although they are both used in aromatherapy and other applications where scent is important.
Essential oils are derived from natural plant sources, such as flowers, leaves, bark, or roots, through processes such as steam distillation or cold pressing. They are highly concentrated and contain the volatile compounds that give plants their characteristic scent and therapeutic properties. On the other hand, fragrance oils (perfume oils) are synthetic or artificial fragrances that are designed to mimic the scent of natural materials. They are created in a laboratory and may contain a mixture of synthetic and natural ingredients. It is important to note that fragrance oils may also contain potential allergens and other harmful chemicals, so it is important to use them with caution and ensure that they are safe for the intended application. Fragrance oils are often used in the perfume industry, as well as in other applications such as candles, soaps, and cosmetics.

Why essential oils need to be diluted before applying?
Our single essential oils as well blends are highly concentrated and 100% undiluted pure should never be applied directly on the skin. When applied directly to the skin, undiluted essential oils can be irritating, sensitizing, or even toxic in some cases As a result, essential oil / Blend always diluted in a carrier oil before being applied to the skin or used in aromatherapy. Diluting essential oils also helps to improve their absorption into the skin and minimize the risk of adverse reactions. Diluting essential oils with a carrier oil, helps to reduce the concentration of the essential oil and make it safer for topical use. It is important to note that not all carrier oils are suitable for all skin types, so it is important to choose a carrier oil that works well for your skin. For dilution ratio, please see our single / Blend oils dilution table.
What precautions must be taken while using essential oils?
Never apply directly on the skin and also highly recommended to check sensitivity is to do a patch test. Do a patch test before use, apply essential oil/blend to your inner arm to test allergic reaction and allow for 24-48 hours, if any allergic reaction occurs like irritations or itchiness. Avoid applying essential oils near the eyes, ears, nose, or other sensitive areas Keep essential oils out of reach of children and pets. Do not ingest essential oils without the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional or certified aromatherapist.
Where should essential oil be stored and when do oils expire?
Essential oils should be stored properly in order to maintain their potency and effectiveness. Keep essential oils in dark glass bottles: Essential oils can be damaged by exposure to light, so it is best to store them in dark glass bottles to protect them from light. Store essential oils in a cool, dark place: Heat and light can cause essential oils to degrade, so it is best to store them in a cool, dark place, such as a cabinet or drawer.
As for the expiration date of essential oils, they do not technically expire, but they can lose their potency over time. The shelf life of essential oils varies depending on the type of oil, but in general, most essential oils can last for several years when stored properly.
